I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

John 10:14-17

Throughout the Bible, God uses the picture of a shepherd to illustrate His care for His people. David, who had spent his youth tending his father’s sheep, understood the responsibility of a shepherd to feed, guide, and protect his flock. He wrote, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). Much later, through the prophet Ezekiel, God rebuked the leaders of Israel who had failed to care for His people. They had served themselves rather than the flock entrusted to them. But God promised, “For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out” (Ezekiel 34:11).

When Jesus declared, “I am the good shepherd,” He was revealing Himself as the fulfillment of God’s promise. He is the Shepherd David described in Psalm 23—the one who provides, guides, protects, and restores. And He is the Shepherd promised in Ezekiel 34, who seeks His scattered sheep and gathers them into His fold. Unlike the unfaithful shepherds who cared only for themselves, Jesus knows His sheep personally and loves them sacrificially. Unlike a hired servant who might flee when danger comes, Jesus willingly laid down His life for His sheep.

There is great comfort in knowing that Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He does not simply watch over His flock from a distance. He understands our weaknesses, sees the dangers we face, and knows exactly what we need. We may not always understand where He is leading us or why He allows certain difficulties into our lives, but we can always trust His heart. The Good Shepherd loved us enough to give His life for us, and He rose again victorious over death. We can trust Him to faithfully care for us every day of our lives.
