And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it. (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

Numbers 12:1-3

Meekness is not a quality that the world values. The world tells us to be strong and insist on our rights. The world tells us to take advantage of power and position every chance we get. The world tells us to defend ourselves above anything else. God tells us to live very differently. When we as His children walk in the Spirit, our lives will be characterized by traits that make us like Jesus, including meekness. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).

A. W. Tozer wrote, “The meek man is not a human mouse afflicted with a sense of his own inferiority. Rather he may be in his moral life as bold as a lion and as strong as Samson; but he has stopped being fooled about himself. He has accepted God’s estimate of his own life. He knows he is as weak and helpless as God declared him to be, but paradoxically, he knows at the same time that he is in the sight of God of more importance than angels. In himself, nothing; in God, everything. That is his motto.”

The value of meekness in God’s eyes is not determined by what the world thinks. God is looking for people who are committed to living as He has called us to live. The blessings that follow are real because God never makes empty promises. What Jesus said is just as true now as when He first uttered the words on a hill beside the Sea of Galilee. “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5).
