Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

Proverbs 3:3-7

Charles Spurgeon once told of a city missionary who had been warned about a man in his district who was openly hostile to Christianity. One morning during his Bible reading, the missionary came to Joel 3:3 and noticed the phrase “sold a girl for wine.” Curious, he checked his concordance and discovered that the singular word “girl” appeared only once in the Bible.

Later that same day, he passed the hostile man’s house and felt compelled to knock on the door. The man challenged him with an unexpected question: “Can you tell me how many times the word ‘girl’ appears in the Bible?”

“Once,” the missionary replied, and gave him the reference in Joel.

The man was stunned. The missionary explained that he had not known the answer until that very morning, when he had read the passage in his devotions. That remarkable providence opened the door for further conversation, and in time the man and his family were brought to Christ.

God knows what we need. God knows what is coming next. God is able to guide us and prepare us for things we haven’t even considered. Yet on many occasions we trust our own experience and knowledge and opinions rather than His. Instead of insisting on going our own way, we should be humble in seeking God’s help and willing to follow wherever He leads. This is true for every part of our lives. God has all we need in store, and we must claim it in faith to receive it.
