Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
Philippians 4:8-9
A 2023 study from Mayo Clinic highlighted the importance of the way we think about the world, ourselves, and others to our overall physical, mental, and spiritual health. They found that there is a clear and measurable link. The study said, “If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you’re likely an optimist—someone who practices positive thinking. Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:
- Increased life span
- Lower rates of depression
- Lower levels of distress and pain
- Greater resistance to illnesses
- Better psychological and physical well-being
- Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease and stroke
- Reduced risk of death from cancer
- Reduced risk of death from respiratory conditions
- Reduced risk of death from infections
- Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress”
The God who created and formed us knows all about the impact of our thoughts on our emotions and behavior. That is why He instructs us to control our thinking rather than allowing it to control us: “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
When we fill our minds with things that are honest and true we will not easily fall prey to the lies of Satan. When we fill our minds with things that are lovely and of good report we will not be discouraged by the circumstances of life around us.
