O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Psalm 8:1-4

All of the things that God created in the beginning were perfect. There was nothing to mar the beauty or function of the physical world, rather everything pointed to the greatness and glory of God. All that God made was good: “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day” (Genesis 1:31).

In comparison to the massive expanse of the universe with the sun, the moon and the stars testifying continually to God’s power, human beings are small and insignificant. If the heavens are just finger work for God, how can man be of importance or value in His eyes? The answer is found in God’s love for us and in His purpose for creating us.

What makes man the crown of God’s creation is not our wisdom, power, or ability, but the fact that God made us in His own image. He values us so greatly that Jesus willingly came into the world, took on a human body, and died for our sins. “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man” (Hebrews 2:9). The God who created the heavens is mindful of us, and the cross is the greatest proof of His love. We should never allow our smallness to make us doubt our value to God. Instead, it should fill us with wonder, humility, and confidence that the One who holds the universe in His hands also cares for us personally.
