Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

Isaiah 46:9-11

Two of the most comforting truths that are available to us as children of God are that He is in control and that He is faithful. We live in a world filled with challenges, and there are many times when we do not fully see a path forward. But God is not limited. He sees and knows all things—not just before they happen but before the world was even created. There is no power that can successfully resist God’s purpose. There are no problems that can force Him to change His plans. There are many times when we are not sure what is coming or what we should do next, but God is always there. He never abandons or forsakes His own.

The seventeenth-century Scottish pastor and theologian Samuel Rutherford wrote, “Duties are ours, events are God’s; When our faith goes to meddle with events, and to hold account upon God’s Providence, and beginneth to say, ‘How wilt Thou do this or that?’ we lose ground; we have nothing to do there; it is our part to let the Almighty exercise His own office, and steer His own helm; there is nothing left for us, but to see how we may be approved of Him, and how we roll the weight of our weak souls upon Him who is God omnipotent.”

God’s sovereign control over our world gives us peace even when we are troubled. He knows what is happening even if we feel alone, and He always does what is truly best.
