Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
Malachi 3:4-6
One of the most famous geographical features in New England was the “Old Man of the Mountain” or “Great Stone Face” in New Hampshire. This series of rock ledges in the White Mountains greatly resembled a man’s face. It was first described in writing by surveyors in 1805, and its fame spread when Nathaniel Hawthorne published a story about it in 1850. The rock formation became a special emblem for the Granite State, even appearing on the state quarter. Over the centuries, however, storms, freezing and thawing water, and erosion gradually weakened the formation. In May 2003, most of the edifice finally collapsed. There are now tributes in place that attempt to recreate the appearance of the famed rock formation, but the real thing is gone forever.
Everything in this world is changing from day to day. We are all getting older. Some of us have made many trips to the cemetery to bury family and friends. Some institutions and churches that once stood for what is right have changed their doctrine or even disappeared completely. There are a significant number of “facts” that were once taught with confidence and assurance in school which have proven to be false. Updates and revisions are required to keep textbooks up to date. Yet with all of the changes of the world there is one thing that is sure and trustworthy. God never changes. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17).
