Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Luke 6:36-38

The law of sowing and reaping that God set into the framework of His creation is true and applicable in every facet of life. It is true in the literal sense. When it comes to plants, a person who wants broccoli shouldn’t put potatoes in the ground. It is true in matters of human relationship. People who are judgmental and refuse to give mercy should not expect to receive any in return. And it is true in financial matters as well. If we selfishly hoard our resources by refusing to sow, we should not be surprised if we only see a scant harvest. Solomon wrote, “There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty” (Proverbs 11:24). Our attitude toward giving is not grounded on the hope of receiving a reward, although God faithfully blesses those who give, but on our love for God and our desire to glorify Him.

J. C. Ryle wrote, “Anything whereby we may glorify God is a talent. Our gifts, our influence, our money, our knowledge, our health, our strength, our time, our senses, our reason, our intellect, our memory, our affections, our privileges as members of Christ’s church, our advantages as possessors of the Bible – all, all are talents. Whence came these things? What hand bestowed them? Why are we what we are? Why are we not the worms that crawl on the earth? There is only one answer to these questions. All that we have is a loan from God. We are God’s stewards. We are God’s debtors. Let this thought sink deeply into our hearts.”
