And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 12:7-9

Every day we are in conflict with powerful forces dedicated to drawing us away from God. While we sometimes have visible enemies with whom we must contend, more often our foes, though real, cannot be seen with human eyes: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).

Because we are given spiritual weapons and armor for the battle, we do not need to fear the power of the enemy. It is real, but it is also limited. Anything that Satan can do is nothing compared to the unlimited power of God. We know what the final result of the conflict is going to be, and as part of God’s family we are on the winning side of that battle. In fact, the ultimate battle has already been won, and the daily battles we face are with God working on behalf.

God fights on behalf of those who rely on Him. When David faced Goliath he was skilled with his sling, but he did not rely on that skill for the victory. Instead, he trusted that God would work to bring down the giant despite Goliath’s advantages in size, armor and experience. God is never challenged by Satan’s schemes or attacks. He is the ultimate source of power, and He places that power at the disposal of His children for the battles of life. While in our own power we have no chance of victory, when we fight in God’s power we will not be defeated.
